Letters from an Ecuadorian Expedition

Here are a series of letters that I wrote during my expedition to Ecuador in January 2012. Sorry this is not live since I wanted to be able to post videos and pictures at the same time on CT.

Hope you enjoy these letters over the next few weeks!

Hola!

You have just received the first email of a series of updates I will be sending live from Ecuador during the next 2 weeks. Indeed, tomorrow morning I will be flying out to Quito to start my 2012 Ecuador Expedition. Some of you might think that the word expedition is too much for climbing volcanoes in Ecuador ( that are for the most part technically easy) but I like to use this term for several reasons:
1- It makes me feel hardcore….

2- It is an aggressive trip with a challenging goal: one 4000m+ mountain, three 5000m+volcanoes and one 6000m+ volcano. All of this in a two week window.

The program is also expedition like leaving little room for improvisation, however we will have to show some flexibility depending on how mother nature feels about our adventure.

One of our biggest threats will be altitude, so I have created a graf that if we follow should increase our chances of good acclimatization:

Our first climb (3rd day in Ecuador) Will be Ruccu Pinchinca, an easy scramble on the outskirts of Quito. 4700m high. This will be our acclimatization hike.

On our 5th day, we will have the technical climb of Illiniza Sur, an old volcano with a height of 5263m. This should be the most exciting climb!

We will then sleep in a small rural town and head up the next day to the mighty Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world at 5897m.

Back to Quito, we will rest for 48 h before heading to Cayambe, a heavily glaciated volcano located at latitude 0! The summit is at 5790m

Hopefully, after successfully climbing these 4 peaks, we will rest in Quito before attempting the highest point in Ecuador at 6310m, the mighty Chimborazo!

And then flying back home to jade everyone with my climbing stories.

As a side note, I will only be climbing with my loyal climbing partner Dean and all climbs will be unguided.

I hope you will enjoy my updates from the comfort of your home.

Sincerely Adrien
